  • Founded in 1887

  • In addition to sprawling, upscale homes and modern amenities, the city of La Verne boasts eight mobile home parks and three large retirement communities, which house the active senior citizen population.
  • Thousands of school-age youth who attend public and private schools, and a well-respected college, University of La Verne.
  • La Verne is also home to an airport.
  • La Verne operates under a council-manager form of government, where residents are considered stockholders in a municipal corporation. Citizen commissions advise the council on matters relevant to planning, senior affairs, drug and alcohol resistance and beautification.

  • Once home to Native Americans, La Verne retains several related artifacts which were verified by archeologists.
  • Founded when Isaac Wilson Lord, a Los Angeles businessman, persuaded the Santa Fe Railroad to extend its line through the area where he owned property.
  • On May 25, 1887, Lord hosted the largest land sale in Southern California to that time.
  • He sent brass bands up and down the streets of LA and San Bernardino inviting people for a free ride to the new town of “Lordsburg.”
  • Over 2,500 people accepted the invitation and bought $200,000 worth of lots.
  • Building began immediately.
  • The most notable construction included a hotel with more than 60 rooms.
  • Within four months, residents and city officials added water mains, a post office, a newspaper, and shops.
  • As competition escalated between the Southern Pacific Railroad and the Santa Fe Railroad, passenger rates from the Midwest to Los Angeles dropped to just $1 per person.

  • Thousands came just to see.
  • Others stayed and bought land.
  • In 1912, the residents of Lordsburg tried to change the name of the community, but Isaac Wilson Lord, a nonresident large land owner blocked the attempt.
  • After his death in March of 1917, Lordsburg citizens voted to change the city name to La Verne.
  • During this time period, the citrus industry engaged nearby communities.
  • By 1919, more than a thousand carloads of fruit were shipped annually.
  • The growing, picking, packing, and shipping of oranges, grapefruit and lemons influenced life in La Verne.
  • By the 1940’s, growers ran into trouble as quality and size of fruit began to decline. This mysterious time period became known as “The quick decline.”
  • Out of sheer desperation, people started selling groves to housing developers.
  • After World War II, La Verne remained a relatively small college town.
  • Thousands had come to California for military service or to work in war-related industries. Many who had come from small towns in the Midwest and East felt comfortable in La Verne and decided to stay.
  • Today, La Verne offers residents and visitors a good mix of residential, commercial and industrial amenities. It remains a “close knit” community which is home to many fine institutions and facilities such as: University of La Verne, Brackett Airport and fine public and private schools.
  • One of the most desirable communities in metropolitan Southern California, La Verne is a progressive city that has retained its charm.
